Suzhou: East China's Best Noodles

Noodles in Shanghai suck. They are often mushy, bland and made solely to fill people up. Suzhou is different. It has been a rich city for centuries, more than enough time to develop a highly refined food culture. One of the things that stands out so starkly is how seasonal Suzhou's food is. Summer is the time for fengzhen noodles and for three-shrimp noodles, and the latter are only around for a number of weeks. Read this story for more.

This tour takes you to three of the city's best noodle restaurants: Tong De Xing, Yu Xing Ji, and Yu Mian Zhai. They are all different styles and all excellent. At Tong De Xing, we'll go for their fengzhen noodles, which is all about the broth, made from an expensive stock containing pork bones, eel bones, whole hens and more. At Yu Xing Ji, we'll split the order: five three-shrimp noodles, made with tiny peeled river shrimp, their eggs (like the smallest caviar ever) and the gunk from the head (much better than it sounds). And five "er mian huang", or two sides yellow, a crispy fried noodle topped with peeled river shrimp and stewed pork tendon. Yu Xing Ji is more than 300 years old and a noodle powerhouse. From there, we'll cross the street to Yu Mian Zhai, a newcomer in the world of Suzhou noodles that is carving out a niche for very high quality and luxury ingredients. Here, we'll try five of the owners' three-shrimp noodles, which are done differently than Yu Xing Ji, and five wild duck noodles, a deeply rich and dark broth stewed with a duck thigh and leeks.

The tour is led by food writer Chris St. Cavish, and his irreverent take on food. He'll go through some of the history of the dishes and the restaurants, and try to get us into the kitchen to see the all-important soup bases, though that's up to the whim of the chef on any given day.

The ticket includes round-trip transport to Suzhou in a private van (pickup at a central location in Shanghai), the cost of the noodles at all three restaurants (they are not cheap!!) and St. Cavish as the guide. It should take a total of four to five hours, and has to start early in the morning -- noodle shops in Suzhou get rammed at 10am and sell out by 1pm.

Sorry vegetarians, we'd love to have you, but the broths are all based on meat stocks and there's no way around that.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • Can I choose a specific seat?

Unfortunately, no. Ticketing systems in China vary from venue to venue, and many are not advanced enough to offer specific seat selection. The event promoters and venues that we work with currently have no systems in place that allow third party ticketing agents to access their respective floors plans. However, whenever you buy a ticket from us, you will automatically receive the best available seats within the category you've selected. Sometime the tickets price categories' name won't be matched on the actually physical tickets. But the value will be the same you choose.

  • How do I pay for my tickets?

We have a couple of payment options available; 1. Online Payment: We now support WeChat and Alipay for online purchases. Simply scan the QR the payment page directs you to. 2. Cash/Card on Delivery: You can also pay our delivery staff directly either in cash, or with a local UnionPay card. Overseas clients can also pay via bank transfer, however, you’ll need to send us an email so we can sort out bank info and e-invoice. If you need a fapiao for your purchase, then please email us the relevant details (company title, tax number and your order number) .

  • What happens if the show gets cancelled? Will I get my money back?

Yes, SmartTickets always refunds ticket purchases if a show gets cancelled. This guarantee is one of the reasons that people choose to purchase through SmartTickets instead of less reliable sources. Please note, though, that we only refund the face value of the tickets.

  • I live outside Shanghai, how can I get my tickets?

We can deliver the tickets to you through Shunfeng Express if you are located outside Shanghai. For this option, purchase the tickets online using Alipay or WeChat. Please fill in the booking information with your address in Chinese to avoid confusion in the delivery process. Please note: We can only accept cash for deliveries within certain Shanghai area (for details, see the "cash on delivery" area map). Overseas customers may also choose the bank transfer option by emailing us. We will then send you an invoice with the bank transfer info after you’ve placed the order. However, the delivery address must be in Shanghai, for example, to a hotel. For more details, please contact us.

  • Oops! I missed the online payment QR code the first time!

If you missed your payment QR code, you can find it again on the Order Status page. Enter your booking code and email address, then click the big green "Pending Payment" button. Please note: online payment orders will automatically be canceled if the payment is not completed within 30 mins.

  • Can I pay online with a credit card?

Unfortunately, no. We've been working to implement an online payment system, which should be available soon! The nature of risk management and licensing issues with online payments made within China makes it a particularly delicate process.

  • If I lose my ticket, can I get a replacement?

Unfortunately, all physical tickets are not replaceable. The concert venues have fixed seat numbers, and to avoid conflicts caused by duplicate tickets with the same seats, ticketing agencies and promoters are not permitted to print tickets twice. If you've lost your e-ticket, you can login to the order status page and resend the e-ticket to your email.
